The Rise of Dual-Use Objects in War exposes how civilian infrastructure such as hospitals, schools, and power plants is increasingly targeted in war.

The article highlights how militaries are expanding strikes on “dual-use objects”—sites that serve both civilian and military purposes.

This vital data collection effort, led by an exceptional team of Yale researchers through fieldwork and on-the-ground reporting, reveals that strikes on dual-use infrastructure are far more widespread than publicly acknowledged, putting civilians at greater risk.

We collaborated with the Yale Law research team to translate this data into a live site featuring interactive visualizations that make visible the scale and human cost of these attacks.

As wars in Syria, Iraq, and Iran continue to devastate civilian life, this research and the data visualization that brings it to light underscore an urgent truth: action is needed to strengthen protections for civilians under humanitarian law.
